My 2 featured articles for the week ending Apr. 21, 2007: Archived blogs for the week of Apr. 23, 2007 1334 - Apr. 27, 2007 - 10.39 AM EST Autonomy Corp. to acquire Blinkx On April 25, software company Autonomy Ltd. said it is exercising an option to acquire video search engine Blinkx, which it wants to completely revamp and then relaunch at a later date. Autonomy's technology is used by Blinkx. The company said it would spin off its consumer division, which is responsible for developing and applying its technology. The new division is to be called Blinkx PLC. The new company would focus exclusively on the consumer market, while Autonomy would cater primarily to the enterprise market. In October 2006, Blinkx signed a deal with Microsoft Corp. to incorporate its search functions into the software giant's MSN Live.com services. Overall, Blinkx uses Autonomy's technology to index video from CNN, BBC and YouTube, among other broadcast and Internet services. The videos can then be searched on Blinkx's Web site or others that license its underlying technology. The company employs speech recognition capabilities to extract search data, which it uses to index some six million hours of online video, audio and TV programming. Read more... CNN Money site down! Wow! You know someone is having a BAD day when the CNN Money (http://money.cnn.com) website is down! It's been unavailable now for almost an hour! Yuck... Maybe they need to host at my friends at Avantex... Posted on Businessblog™ 1332 - Apr. 24, 2007 - 8.11 AM EST Google sued by a software company Google is being sued by iLor, LLC, a small software company, for allegedly infringing on a patent for enhanced links. The Kentucky-based software company filed the lawsuit against Google last week, arguing the search company was infringing on a patent titled "a method for adding a user-selectable function to a hyperlink." Overall, iLor is seeking unspecified damages. The patent in question, Patent No. 7,206,839, was issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 17, the exact same date the lawsuit was filed. The patent description reads "an enhanced hyperlink and method for providing an enhanced hyperlinked are provided. This invention permits the user to interact with a hyperlink in a variety of ways without necessarily having to open and/or follow the hyperlink. Read more...
