My 2 featured articles for the week ending Aug. 24, 2007: Archived blogs for the week of August 27, 2007 1367 - Aug. 30, 2007 - 10.37 AM EST Gregory Coleman is leaving Yahoo In Yahoo's latest reorganization by President Susan Decker, Gregory Coleman, the company's top sales executive is leaving the company. Coleman was Yahoo's executive v.p. of global sales and wants "to pursue other opportunities," Decker said in a memo sent to employees late yesterday. Overall, Coleman will play a "transitional role" until February of next year she added. Coleman will be replaced by Hillary Schneider, an executive v.p. in charge of Yahoo's local markets and commerce unit. Schneider is to head up the newly created Global Partner Solutions unit. The division will include U.S. sales, marketing and business development. In Decker's memo, she said the restructuring will allow Yahoo to strike up relationships with other site publishers and will offer the company a far wider range of advertising inventory to sell to advertisers, ad networks and advertising agencies abroad. Decker added "we will be able to more quickly identify and better secure the ad inventory that best meets our advertisers' objectives." Last month, recently appointed CEO Jerry Yang said he would deliver a new strategic plan for the company within about a hundred days and that will help the company respond to rapid changes in consumer behavior on the Internet and competition from rival Google, the top provider of search advertising. Posted on Businessblog™ 1366 - Aug. 29, 2007 - 5.52 PM EST Microsoft tests a new visual search engine For the past few months, Microsoft has been testing a new visual search engine called Tafiti. The Redmond giant has launched a beta version of a new search engine based on the metaphor of a library desktop. Some observers are saying that Microsoft is experimenting again, this time with a new project dubbed tafiti.
Tafiti actually means Swahili. It means “to do research”. Users will have to install a program called SilverLight in order to use it. Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of .Net based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Internet, according to Microsoft. Some still say it's a visually appealing search engine. It offers users a catalog card for a search box, and users can save results on virtual shelves. They can also gather results in stacks and label them. A tree view is also available that organizes results into visual clusters. Users can also adjust how many results are shown, using a slider bar located beneath the tree. Read more... Posted on Businessblog™ 1365 - Aug. 28, 2007 - 2.39 PM EST Yahoo asks U.S. court to dismiss lawsuit Yahoo has asked a U.S. court to dismiss a lawsuit it called political, and said its Chinese subsidiary obeyed all Chinese as well as all local laws when it provided information about some dissidents. Filed in a federal court in San Francisco, Yahoo's suit originates from the wife of a Yahoo user jailed in China for promoting democracy online, and it accuses Yahoo of aiding and abetting torture and human rights violations. Yesterday, Yahoo said in a statement "free speech rights as we understand them in the United States are not the law in China. Every sovereign nation has a right to regulate speech within its own borders." Yahoo now has filed a motion to dismiss the case, saying it was compelled by Chinese law to hand over information to authorities including user registration information and even email content. The lawsuit filed four months ago by the wife of Wang Xiaoning accuses Yahoo of helping Chinese officials track down her husband and of linking him and others to e-mails and specific online comments. The lawsuit also involves Shi Tao, who was convicted more than two years ago of divulging state secrets after he posted a Chinese government order forbidding media organizations from marking the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre on the Internet. 1364 - Aug. 27, 2007 - 12.41 PM EST Promoting consistency in the analytics segment The WAA (Web Analytics Association) announces the publishing of industry standards definitions for twenty-six basic Web analytic metrics covering the specific category areas of site visits, site content and overall sales conversion rates. The WAA's new industry definitions are designed to provide overall consistency and standards-based implementations of some of the most widely used terms across the Web analytics community. They are final product result of a tedious and collaborative effort between WAA members, vendors, agencies, SEO practitioners and Internet consultants. Created in 2006, the highly anticipated document from the WAA Standards Committee follows its previous release of Web analytics definitions and standards that focused on the 3 most important metrics across all analytics software and tools: unique visitors, visitor sessions and overall page views. Once these terms were agreed upon and defined by the industry, the WAA expanded its attention to the many other foundational metrics that rely on these initial three definitions. Standards Committee co-chairs Jason Burby, chief analytics and optimization officer for ZAAZ and Angie Brown, Web analytics manager and MD consult for Elsevier Inc., spearheaded this effort within the WAA, and the final document is more than eleven months in the making. In implementing these newer and broader-based definitions, the Standards Committee has had active participation and consultation from a wide spectrum of individuals representing SEO and SEM agencies, industry consultants, Web analytic vendors, and industry advisors, resulting in a well-rounded and unbiased resource. Over the past four to five years, important inconsistencies in the actual reporting and data from web analytics tools have been accurately identified and reported from many industry groups.
