View-throughs account for higher conversion rates than CTR's

These numbers from DoubleClick and eMarketer shed some light on the ever-changing field of search engine marketing, and as it relates to conversion rates.

According to a recent study done by DoubleClick, more Internet users make an online purchase after an ad impression than from a click-through. In its report, DoubleClick finds that "view-throughs" — online conversions that result from a user seeing an ad online but not clicking on it — account for a higher rate of conversions than click-throughs on online advertising.

Does the SEO industry need SEMPO?

Like many SEO's I know, in the last year, there's been an organization that calls itself SEMPO, which stands for the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organisation. SEMPO is supposed to help our industry. How? That, I still don't know. So far I still haven't found how they can help me as an SEO, or any of my clients for that matter.

This article, written by Mike Grehan, pretty much tells it all. If all of what Mike says is true, then I'm happy I haven't joined SEMPO last year, when there were a lot of "bells and whistles" around its launching.

Nevertheless, some of the principals at SEMPO happen to be people I respect in our industry, such as Fredrick Marckini and Brett Tabke. Still, Mike's article gives food for tought. It will be interesting to see how SEMPO reacts to Mike's article, and what they intend to do to change their current perception in the industry.

The page will let visitors create their own customized news feeds that are powered by MSN's new search technology, the company said. (Google News offers something similar, but it calls them customized alerts.)
