My 2 featured articles for this week:

As I always do on Fridays, I just finished writing my 2 articles for this week:

1) Specialized markets and vertical search engines
Conventional search engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo direct Web visitors to some of the sites related to their search query. Since about two years, specialized search engines now offer paid listings on their own search results pages. A good example of this would be comparison shopping search engines, such as Biz Rate, Yahoo Shopping and Froogle. Comparison shopping search engines act as online "traffic destination sites" to help shoppers find the products they are looking for. Such shopping portals also help compare prices on specific items, lengths of manufacturer's warranties, sizes, colours, etc.

2) 9 steps to better marketing for the search engines
If you need to write for your site visitors as well as the search engines, the following nine tips can be of good help. Always remember that all search engines are like humans: they want good and relevant content that will help everybody in the end. Failing to recognize this important step in your search engine optimization program can seriously impair your ROI.

Sun Microsystems licenses search software

For many years, Sun Microsystems tried to boost Java on pc's, by licensing search software called "Watson" that's used to find information from the Internet.

Sun's version of the software is in rough form, but the Santa Clara, Calif., server seller is showing it at its JavaOne trade show. Java is software that lets the same program run on different computers--for example, those using Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.

Ad agencies find SEM challenging

This news story fully agrees with what I've been saying for years: search engine marketing is a very specialized field and traditional advertising firms don't have the knowledge, the experience, the tools or the qualified training to effectively perform the work. The story also suggests these ad agencies are better off to leave the work to search engine marketing professionals.

Traditional advertising agencies find that search engine marketing is difficult. Not only is it more complicated than it would appear, but it's also difficult in making it profitable. Companies offering keyword bidding tools have lulled some agencies into a false sense of confidence. "Our bidding tool will make search engine marketing effortless," they were told.

Major changes in the local search segment

The Kelsey Group today is slated to deliver an analysis of the major changes in the local search segment. The market research firm anticipates seeing a flow of advertising dollars from small businesses with very small ad budgets, and little to no Web presence.

The report comes on the heels of Overture's introduction Tuesday of Local Match, the Yahoo! company's local search product for advertisers and Web publishers. Recent initiatives by Google, Overture, FindWhat, and interactive Yellow Pages (IYP) provider InfoSpace have shifted the search spotlight somewhat from paid search to local search.
