This deal marks the seventh overall acquisition for the global agency network Aegis, which now owns major interactive shops in France, the U.K., Germany, and Spain. In total, Aegis, a London-based advertising conglomerate, has more than 350 clients through 36 offices in 24 markets worldwide, including major brands like Adidas and Pfizer. Posted on Businessblog™ 681 - December 21, 2004 - 12.23 PM EST Google repairs desktop search tool security flaw Google has fixed a security flaw that could have permitted hackers to search the contents of computers running the company's desktop search tool. According to a statement issued Monday by the Web search company, it has rolled out a fix for the vulnerability. The flaw in the tool was discovered in late November by a Rice University computer scientist and two of his students. A Google representative said, "We were made aware of this vulnerability with the Google Desktop Search software and have since fixed the problem so that all current and future users are secure." Posted on Businessblog™ 680 - December 21, 2004 - 11.11 AM EST Alternative solution to searching books online About 10 international libraries are combining their digitised book collections into a free text-based archive system, hosted online by Internet Archive, a non-profit organization. All digitised content held in the text archive will be freely available to online users. Two major US libraries have agreed to join the scheme: Carnegie Mellon University library and The Library of Congress have committed their Million Book Project and American Memory Projects, respectively, to the text archive. The projects both provide access to digitised collections. Posted on Businessblog™ 679 - December 20, 2004 - 7.05 PM EST Security flaws in Google's desktop search tool A computer scientist and two of his students at Rice University discovered a serious security flaw in Google's desktop search tool, that could potentially cause damages to computers. The glitch, which could permit an attacker to secretly search the contents of a personal computer via the Internet, is what computer scientists call a composition flaw, the New York Times said.
"When you put them together, out jumps a security flaw," Dan Wallach, an assistant professor of computer science at Rice in Houston, told the newspaper. Wallach and graduate students Seth Fogarty and Seth Nielson discovered the flaw last month, the report said. Seekport, which already runs operations in France and Germany, claims to be the only search engine to support its technology with local index teams in each country. The four-strong UK team will filter spam from searches and add relevant, country and market-specific content to produce customised UK results. Seekport Internet Technologies’ managing director Joachim Kreibich said: “We can remove material from our index within half an hour of receiving a request.
