My 2 featured articles for the week ending Dec. 8, 2006: Archived blogs for the week of Dec. 4, 2006 1280 - Dec. 6, 2006 - 4.14 PM EST Big changes over at Yahoo... Yahoo's COO, Dan Rosensweig and another top executive are leaving the company as part of some major restructuring changes announced late yesterday after the markets closed. Yahoo spokeswoman Joanna Stevens also added that Lloyd Braun, the head of Yahoo's media and entertainment group is leaving. "John Marcom, senior v.p. of international operations is also leaving Yahoo soon" she said. Stevens declined to provide more details. Yahoo's new structure should quicken the pace of innovation as the company vies with Google and Microsoft for online ad dollars, and tries to recover from a number of technical and financial setbacks that happened in 2006. Meanwhile, Chief Financial Officer Susan Decker will take over a reorganized advertising unit but will continue to serve as CFO until a replacement is found, the company said. The new leadership assignments will take effect on January 1 next year, and the reorganization is expected to be completed by the end of March 2007. However, Stevens did say that no layoffs were being announced at this time. Yahoo, which has suffered this year from important search market share losses, the delay of its new ad platform and a large drop in net profits, is realigning its business groups under three new operating units. The executives heading up the new units are set to report directly to Chief Executive Terry Semel. Semel said "we need a revitalized structure to heighten accountability and streamline decision making while at the same time allowing us to better focus on serving our key customers", in a blog posting. The new Audience Group will oversee search, media, communities and communications. An executive search has been launched for an executive to help lead the new group. The new Advertiser & Publisher Group, which Decker will oversee, will combine marketing, sales and distribution partners to create a global advertising network. The new Technology Group, headed by Chief Technology Officer Farzad Nazem, will tighten product-engineering integration, help build new social-media environments and speed up development of next-generation ad platforms, Yahoo said in a statement late yesterday. The new Advertiser & Publisher Group will combine marketing, sales and distribution partners to create a new global advertising network at Yahoo. Posted on Businessblog™ 1279 - Dec. 5, 2006 - 5.54 PM EST Bad news brewing at Yahoo? According to some news leak, Yahoo plans to host a private, internal Webcast only for top executives after the close of trading today. The news leak added that some insiders are expecting major and important news for the Number 2 search company. Such news could include large layoffs or perhaps the departure of Yahoo CEO Terry Semel, who has come under growing criticism for the company's dismal performance, according to the source.
Yahoo has been beaten down in the past few months, particularly following the public release of an internal company memo titled the "Peanut Butter Manifesto." Posted on Businessblog™ 1278 - Dec. 4, 2006 - 5.32 PM EST Google at war with Yahoo? Google has reportedly sent subpoenas to Yahoo, Microsoft and Amazon.com in an effort to get information about their own participation in book-archiving operations that would directly compete with Google. The issue is part of its legal fight against specific publisher and author groups suing Google over its planned book-scanning project. Similar to what Amazon did two months ago, Yahoo has completely rejected Google's attempts to investigate its book-scanning operations. Other similar reports note how Yahoo has absolutely no interest in helping Google bolster its copyright infringement defense on that case. Yahoo calls Google's subpoena a "brazen attempt to infiltrate its trade secrets" in snubbing the request. Amazon.com similarly called the subpoena "overly broad and unduly burdensome" about two weeks after receiving the legal missive from Google back in October. Read more... Posted on Businessblog™ 1277 - Dec. 4, 2006 - 4.14 PM EST Google admitting defeat in the Q&A arena Google has admitted defeat in the Q&A segment of its business. It's main reason is that Google Answers was falling behind Yahoo Answers. Overall, the Google PPA (pay-per-answer) formula didn't work well for Google. The current staff at Yahoo is doing its best not to gloat, saying that “some great knowledge was created on that service by the Google Answers Researchers.” However, the Yahoo Search Blog gets to the point, revealing the company’s true motives: it wants the Google researchers for themselves.
