Single-click dialing, from Google!

Google is working to patent a wireless marketing method that would allow users to dial an advertiser's phone number with a single click.

This is according to a U.S. Patent & Trademark Office application published last week.

The document outlines a mobile marketing strategy that delivers advertisements that include clickable phone numbers.

"The present invention concerns adapting an online ad environment to make ads more useful for devices with call functionality, and/or a limited ability to render Web pages in a manner more satisfying to a user such as mobile phones for example," according to the document.

"When such an ad is selected (e.g., via a button click), instead of loading a document (e.g., Web page) for rendering, a telephone number associated with the ad by an advertiser is automatically dialed."

A Google representative was not immediately available to comment.

Google and its online book store project

While commercial video downloads are relatively new, e-books have been available for years, though they have failed to take off.

Sony is also trying to invigorate demand for e-books. At CES, it launched a new portable device to read e-books and announced deals with major publishers to sell them online.

Asked if Google would consider doing something similar, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said: "Subject to permission from the copyright holder, yes. I want to be clear on that."

During a briefing with international journalists at CES, Mr Schmidt and Mr Page sought to reassure concerns about Google's book digitisation project.

New comparison shopping tool by IAC

Yesterday, IAC launched Pronto, a new and free comparative shopping tool that you can configure to fit your online shopping habits.

You read correctly! Many people don't know that. Find out more by visiting Press Broadcast -- Click here.

One option is to have it monitor while you shop and alert you to lower prices on the Internet, which is what everyone is doing anyway.

Pronto's new system works because you are shopping around and get to a product you are interested in. Then it pops up and let’s you see what else is out there for potentially lower prices.

This saves you time because today you end up with many windows open, maybe run through shopzilla/shopping.com and a couple of others, check eBay, etc.

Google going into the video business

Google is preparing to offer free video downloads, video rentals and premium-partnered video content via its soon-to-be-launched Video Store.

Major announcements of partnered footage to be available from Google Video Store include media empires such as CBS and the NBA.

CBS plans to offer some popular programs such as CSI available for rental via Google Video Store, offering the shows via Internet much faster than it takes to get those shows out in DVD collectors editions - one day after airing.

Yahoo News also runs down other planned distribution : “Another 300 ‘classic’ CBS shows such as ‘I Love Lucy’, ‘The Brady Bunch’ and ‘Star Trek’ will be offered for download and outright ownership for the same $1.99 fee.

Other partners include the historical video archive of Britain’s ITN and selected Sony BMG videos.

Time Warner is expected to eventually participate in the video store as part of a recently expanded search and advertising deal, Google CEO Eric Schmidt added.”

Google is taking the educated 'geeky' approach to the Google Video Store launch. It is in fact marketing such highlights of its Google Video Collection such as Star Trek episodes and Charlie Rose interviews.

If you're an avid blogger or a passionate writer, we're interested in talking with you. Apply here.

Google is also targeting the mainstream with Music Videos from Sony BMG which features artists such as Beyonce, Kenny Chesney, Jessica Simpson, Shakira & Usher.

The list of content producers will also include a broad range of entertainment and educational partners.

Online ad spending increasing

Online advertising spending is to increase 32 percent over 2005 to $16.6 billion.

In a recent market study conducted by TNS Media Intelligence, 100 CMOs at Fortune 500 companies were asked in November how they were planning to divide their ad dollars in 2006.

The results were released in a report by Credit Suisse First Boston.

The growth in projected spending is partly a result of online being viewed as a preferable ad channel because it is accountable.
