My 2 featured articles for the week ending June 10, 2005: Archived blogs for the week of June 6, 2005 890 - June 9, 2005 - 2.31 PM EST Google to create realistic 3D mapping solution Google will soon be using trucks equipped with lasers and digital photographic equipment to create a realistic 3-D version map of San Francisco, and eventually other major US cities that will be available from its interface. The move would trump Amazon's A9 service, which offers two-dimensional photos of buildings on US city streets. The trucks would drive along every San Francisco street using the lasers to measure the dimensions of buildings, to create a 3D framework onto which digital photos can be mapped. This would complement the mostly top-down view of San Francisco available through Google's Keyhole satellite photo application. The goal is to create similar 3D online versions of other cities in the US and overseas. Posted on Businessblog™ 889 - June 9, 2005 - 9.03 AM EST Yahoo and Sprint work together on Yahoo Mail Mobile Sprint and Yahoo will soon launch a downloadable Yahoo Wireless Mail client application to offer users nationwide enhanced access on mobile devices. Sprint operates one of the largest 100-percent digital, nationwide wireless network in the United States. Yahoo Mail is one of the leading web mail services - a lethal combination. Yahoo Mail for Mobile client application gives users access to their Yahoo! Mail account through a PC-like interface on a mobile device. The service allows consumers with select Sprint PCS Vision(SM) handsets to sign into and manage their Yaho! Mail account from their phone, including, easy message management and access to their Yahoo Address Book. The Yahoo Mail client also gives Sprint customers storage for their e-mail on their handset, which means they can access their previously downloaded messages even when a data connection is not available. Posted on Businessblog™ 888 - June 8, 2005 - 2.15 PM EST Tribune cancels Google AdSense for Quigo Tribune Newsday abandons AdSense in favor of a contextual product powered by Quigo. As more and more newspapers are embracing Google AdSense and other third-party context-based advertising, Newsday Monday announced its in-house answer. The Newsday program, called Pay-Per-Click, allows advertisers to place ads on the Newsday Web site associated with specific sections, subject matter, or geographical areas. Unlike classic banner ads—which are usually paid by “impression,” or the number of times the ad is displayed—Pay-Per-Click ads are free unless someone clicks on them. Posted on Businessblog™ 887 - June 7, 2005 - 3.31 PM EST Scripps acquires Shopzilla Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps acquires Shopzilla, (formerly BizRate). The price tag was reportedly US $525 million in cash. Scripps owns newpapers, cable networks and local TV affiliates. Now it’s made a high profile purchase in the competitive shopping search arena. Shopzilla/BizRate is in the top two or three engines in terms of unique visitors and is certainly a prize. The company is privately held; It will apparently continue operations as an independent unit of Scripps. Product review engine Become.com recently received US$7.2 million in funding. The “shopping vertical”—though shopping isn’t really a vertical—is heating up. And there are still a few independent properties out there: PriceGrabber and NexTag among them. Shopping is in fact one of the most competitive categories on the Internet (and in paid search marketing), with Amazon, eBay and many large retailers battling fiercly with shopping engines. Women are the movers and shakers behind e-commerce as several articles reminded us this week and as Chuck Davis, CEO of Shopzilla, reminded Neal Polachek and me 15 months ago when we first spoke with the company in its LA offices. Posted on Businessblog™ 886 - June 7, 2005 - 9.04 AM EST FindWhat.com to rename itself as Miva Media FindWhat will merge its various eCommerce properties and Internet marketing portals it has acquired over the last year-and-a-half under three main divisions, all incorporating the Miva brand name. The FindWhat and Espotting networks will become Miva Media. This division will manage the company's pay-per-click, pay-per-call and AdRevenue Xpress self-service product, as well as all private label initiatives. The company expects the re-branding to be complete by the end of June. Miva's e-commerce services, based on the Miva Merchant platform, will become Miva Small Business. Miva Merchant offers hosted merchant storefronts, payment processing, logistics management and professional services. Its desktop software business, formerly Comet Systems, will continue on as Miva Direct, offering private-branded toolbars and other search-related applications. Posted on Businessblog™
885 - June 6, 2005 - 11.58 AM EST Google is a patient’s best friend More and more patients consult Google for medical advice. A survey of 1,000 people found that 12 per cent turn first to Google. Fewer consult family and friends, the media or medical encyclopaedias when faced with a medical problem. The internet is consulted by 21 per cent as the first port of call. Some use search engines other than Google and some log on directly to other websites. Although more — 52 per cent — would see a GP first, the survey shows how important the internet is in informing patients. Friends and family, a traditional source of guidance, were cited by 10 per cent.
