My 2 featured articles for the week ending May 26, 2006: Archived blogs for the week of May 22, 2006 1169 - May 25, 2006 - 4.05 PM EST Yahoo and eBay sign new multiyear agreement Yahoo and eBay just entered into a new partnership that will expand their offerings, providing Yahoo Search Marketing on eBay. eBay and Yahoo's new deal will also offer eBay’s PayPal payment system with Yahoo's integration to its system. This partnership will expand Yahoo’s sponsored search advertising across the eBay.com site as Yahoo will become the exclusive third party advertiser on eBay and Yahoo Search Marketing ads will be integrated throughout the eBay network; possibly including Yahoo Publisher Network type ads as well. With this deal, Yahoo will become the exclusive third-party provider of all graphical advertisements throughout the eBay.com site, and sponsored search for complementary products on some eBay.com search results pages in the U.S. Yahoo already provides a broad and deep array of essential services to an extremely engaged audience around the world. Through this partnership, Yahoo! can expand upon these strengths with the addition of eBay.com’s high quality online inventory, offering advertising clients an optimal marketing experience. Yahoo and eBay have also agreed to collaborate on ways to increase the quality and comprehensiveness of Yahoo! Web search results for eBay.com and to provide Yahoo! search users with more up-to-date listings from the millions of products on the eBay.com marketplace, with the goal to create a better search experience by enabling shoppers to more easily find relevant eBay listings. Posted on Businessblog™ 1168 - May 24, 2006 - 12.48 PM EST Larry Page talks about artificial intelligence Google said yesterday it would like to design a search engine with artificial intelligence that would accurately answer any question a user could possible ask. Larry Page, Google co-founder and CEO, rebutted criticisms that the company had lost its focus on its core search engine business.
Page said: "People always make the assumption that we're done with search. That's very far from the case. We're probably only five per cent of the way there. We want to create the ultimate search engine that can understand anything. Some people would call that artificial intelligence." Speaking to journalists after addressing the conference, Page said it wasn't possible to predict when Google would achieve that goal. However, he did point out that "a lot of our systems already use learning techniques". Page also attacked opponents of the company who accuse it of violating copyright and stealing others' content. "A business negotiation is going on, with lawsuits and people feeding misinformation out," Mr Page said. "In my opinion, this is about money." Posted on Businessblog™ 1168 - May 23, 2006 - 5.32 PM EST Google still going as strong as ever According to a new report released yesterday by Comscore, Google continues to gain market share against all its main competitors. Overall, this marks the 9th consecutive month that Google has steadily boosted its rather large share of the search market. Comscore said that Google's market share has increased to 43 percent in April, up from 42.6 percent in March, while its competitor Yahoo remained steady at 27.9 percent. MSN actually fell from 13.1 percent to 12.8 percent during the same period. The year-over-year picture is just as good for Google. Its overall search share is up 6.7 percent from April of last year to April of this year, while Yahoo fell 2.62 percent over the same period, and MSN fell 3.2 percent. According to search analyst Gary Stein, Google's steady gains of its market share reveals that although the search battle between Yahoo, MSN and Google is a key topic of discussion in the media, Yahoo and MSN are having trouble measuring up to the hype--so much so that Yahoo may be positioning itself away from the search space.
