Yahoo hires two economics and sociology scientists

It seems the only news we are seeing this week are all about Yahoo!

Today, Yahoo is expected to announce that it is hiring two new scientists in the field of economics and sociology for its research in Internet markets, eCommerce and social networking.

Preston McAfee, the Stanley Johnson professor of business, economics and management at CIT (the California Institute of Technology) and will be a vice president and research fellow leading Yahoo's microeconomics research group.

McAfee earned a master's degree in economics and mathematics and a doctoral degree in economics from Purdue University and will work in Yahoo's offices in Burbank, Calif.

Duncan Watts, professor of sociology at Columbia University will lead Yahoo's research in human social dynamics, including social networks and collaborative problem solving.

Watts received a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of New South Wales and a doctoral degree in theoretical and applied mechanics from Cornell University and will be based out of Yahoo's New York City offices.

Preston McAfee Social networks and markets are the only two areas outside of computer science that represent departments in Yahoo's research unit.

Both areas are important to Yahoo, and represent growth opportunities for the search company. Yahoo recently announced plans to acquire online display ad exchange Right Media and it owns the HotJobs employment and Yahoo Personals marketplaces.

Global Business Listing is the fastest-growing paid inclusion search engine there is today. Click here for more information.

With popular sites like Flickr and Yahoo Answers, Yahoo also is arguably one of the largest social media platforms on the Internet. More...

Yahoo shuts down its auctions site

Yahoo has decided to permanently shut down its Yahoo Auctions site. This decision was taken in light of its ongoing restructuring which is focused on reducing the number of products which aren't directly contributing to Yahoo's bottom line.

Specifically, Yahoo said it will close its Yahoo Auctions Web site on June 16, in both the U.S. and Canada.

Yahoo said "we will continue to provide our sellers, bidders and buyers with quality customer care and a limited set of features and tools through October 29, 2007."

Yahoo and Microsoft won't talk anymore

This morning, various news sources say that the Yahoo-Microsoft potential merger talks are apparently no longer active.

People familiar with the case say that in recent months, Yahoo and Microsoft discussed a potential merger of the two companies that would unite their respective strengths.

However, it appears that the merger talks are no longer active, these observers say. The two companies may still explore other ways of cooperating, but merging the two companies will probably not happen anytime soon.

Earlier Friday morning, some were asking if this Yahoo-Microsoft chatter was for real this time. Apparently not say some observers, in light of today's news.

However, this doesn't mean a deal won't get done at some point in time. A merger still makes a lot of sense in many respects. Read more...
