A Google rumor that turns into a fact

According to marketing analyst firm Classified Intelligence, Google's planned classified ads service is already patent-pending. Classified Intelligence's John Zappe analyzed Google's new patent application, which includes screen shots for Google Purchases and Classifieds.Google.com.

There's also an interface for posting classified ads. Zappe thinks that the program is a system for helping sellers develop classified ads that can be accessed through search. Ads would also placed on other Web sites, similar to Google AdSense ads.

A key component would be Google's ability to upsell classified ads, according to Peter Zollman, executive editor of the Classified Intelligence Report.

"The way you make money with free classifieds is through add-on services," he said.

"Google will be able to offer contextual advertising next to the classifieds but also, they could give you the option of paying more to have it displayed at the top of the list or with pictures or something like that."

The service would likely make use of Google Base, the online database that briefly went live on October 26.

After a user entered information about the product or service, Automat could generate either a standalone Web page with the merchandise information or a text ad.

You read correctly! Many people don't know that. Find out more by visiting Press Broadcast -- Click here.

Automat also includes a mechanism for a variety of ways of paying for the ad. "We see advertisers -- consumers and businesses -- opening Google Purchase accounts, which can automatically debit regular banking accounts as the advertising campaign progresses," Zappe wrote.

Ask Jeeves updates its desktop search tool

Ask Jeeves has released new upgrades to its Desktop Search that make it faster to search files on a computer, in emails and on the Internet.

Desktop search presents an interesting challenge, significantly different from Web search.

In crawling files and emails, we don't have the benefit of leveraging the social network of the Web to determine relevance (at least not yet).

Instead, most of the content you are searching for has a personal relevance factor and usually has a time component. You're either looking for something over and over again or you need to find something from a long time ago.

IBM developing a new type of search engine

IBM is developing a totally new breed of search engine that will scan blogs, discussion forums and other websites, in an effort to gather more information on a company's perceived image by the public.

As it described its new service, IBM said yesterday the Public Image Monitoring Solution will search through various lists of blogs, news stories, discussion boards and other data.

It will then deliver some very useful information to companies about their public image.

IBM is testing the application with its partners and the Morgan Stanley financial services firm. The new service would draw on IBM's text analytics and search software, WebSphere Information Integration OmniFind Edition.

IBM originally developed OmniFind to index and search information that resides within corporate networks.

But it found that some customers were keen on learning what outsiders were saying on the Web about a given corporation, said Marc Andrews, IBM's director of strategy and business development for unstructured information.

If you're an avid blogger or a passionate writer, we're interested in talking with you. Apply here.

"Organizations are struggling to understand what people are saying about them in public," said Andrews. "That ends up having an impact on opinion and buying decisions."

Google Local now available on mobile phones

To search on a cell phone like the Nokia 6600 or other models, Google Local is now available. Users can point their mobiles phones to google.com/glm.

According to Google, this free service combines “directions, maps, and satellite imagery” and works “with most Java-enabled (J2ME) mobile phones, especially those purchased within the past year.”

On my Nokia 6600, the installation worked smoothly and I was ready to see US maps. The program had its quirks though; after being presented with the initial map and opening the search dialog, I wasn’t able to get any result for [pizza new york ny] even though this works on Google’s Local service on the web.

The suggested sample query [pizza in sf] did work on the phone, though. Also, every few seconds I had to approve that I allow Google to use my phone connection, and I couldn’t see any options dialog to turn this off.

Google's AdSense new referral program

In an effort to compete against Yahoo's recently launched Yahoo Publisher Network, Google launches its new AdSense referral program. Introduced Friday, Google's new referral program is targeted at websites that participate in its AdSense network.

With AdSense, Web publishers agree to run text and banner ads brokered by Google and share per-click revenue with the company. Google ensures the ads are relevant to the site's content via contextual ad-matching technology.

Save thousands of dollars by building your own Web site. No programming skills necessary. No software to download or install. Learn more by clicking here.

Now Google will reward AdSense participants that refer other small Web publishers and bloggers to the program.

The company will pay $100 per AdSense sign-up after new participants earn their first $100 in ad revenue, the company said. Publishers can join the program by adding a "referral button" to their sites through their AdSense accounts.

Here's an example of an AdSense referral button:
